化学

The purpose of the science department at The Mississippi School for 数学 and Science is to give students a broad overview of the sciences and to make them scientifically literate in each of the major subject areas: biology, 化学, 和物理. Emphasis is placed on mastery of basic concepts and laboratory skills through course lectures and discussions, 实验室调查, 实地考察旅行, 旅游, 特殊项目, 客座讲师, and direct involvement with researchers at the college level. Students are given the opportunity to pursue their particular interests through elective courses and independent research.

All students are required to successfully complete one full year of 化学 for 1 CU (two semesters) at 新濠天地官方网站. Students will complete either the two semester sequence of Advanced 化学 I (1⁄2 CU) and Advanced 化学 II (1⁄2 CU) or AP® 化学 (1 CU) to fulfill the requirement.

The Concentration in 化学 is designed for students who pursue an advanced plan of study in 化学 while attending 新濠天地官方网站. The Concentration in 化学 helps colleges identify 新濠天地官方网站 graduates with advanced preparation in 化学 and who might benefit from placement in higher level coursework at the college level. 已完成2.5 approved 化学 Carnegie Units with a B-average in each course or higher while attending 新濠天地官方网站 shall qualify. The 化学 Department and Director for Academic Affairs shall determine which courses meet approval. The Concentration in 化学 is awarded to qualified students whose applications are approved by the Director for Academic Affairs. The approved courses for the Concentration in 化学 shall include:

  1. 1.0卡内基单元AP化学
  2. 额外的1.5个卡内基学分(三个学期), which must include three of the following courses: Organic 化学 (0.5 CU), Introduction to Bio化学 (0.5cu),分析化学(0.5cu),物理化学(0.5 CU).

 

Other course work may not be substituted. Students applying for the recognition and who meet the approved criteria will be awarded a seal on the 新濠天地官方网站 Diploma indicating successful completion of the Concentration in 化学, and the final 新濠天地官方网站 transcript will reflect Graduation with the Concentration in 化学.

Advanced 化学 I is an in-depth study of the skills and theoretical frameworks of 化学. 测量, 原子和分子结构, 化学计量学, 成键, 周期表和周期表, and nomenclature will be studied with an emphasis on the mathematics of 化学 including dimensional analysis and problem solving.

Advanced 化学 II studies the types of and laws governing the reactions of matter. 特别是, students will study solubility and precipitation, 气体和气体法规, 酸和碱, 分子间作用力, 溶液化学, and a brief introduction to chemical kinetics and thermodynamics. 

This course provides an in-depth study of the principles of modern 化学 and should prepare the student for the AP® exam in 化学. This course requires several hours of study time beyond that required in other courses as well as a laboratory assignment for each week.

This course is a senior level course designed to be an introduction to the basic principles of organic 化学. Topics to be covered include nomenclature, elementary reactions of functional groups, 立体化学, 和异构.

This is a senior-level course designed as an intensive survey of biological molecules-proteins, 核酸, lipids and carbohydrates and their interactions from a cellular level to an atomic description. The major emphasis will be on proteins, but a portion of the course will also be dedicated to nucleic acid, 脂质和碳水化合物结构, 和新陈代谢.

This course is designed to introduce the student to the methods used in the quantitative analysis of chemical compounds.  This includes classical gravimetric and volumetric methods as well as modern methods such as spectrometry and chromatography.  The course also includes a brief overview of statistical methods used in data analysis.  The class is primarily lab-based, but does include some out-of-class work. 

This is a senior-level course designed to introduce the student to the laws of thermodynamics as they relate to chemical systems and chemical reactions. This includes considerations of enthalpy and entropy, with a primary focus on chemical and physical equilibria.  The course includes both a lecture/discussion and a laboratory component. 

This course is designed to give the student an opportunity for individualized learning in 化学. The student will select faculty advisors and with their help, choose a particular problem of interest in 化学 and pursue the problem.
